Day Care Information

Advances in modern techniques mean that day care surgery is fast becoming an attractive option to many patients, offering the benefit of minimal disruption to family life and work.

  • On arrival you will be welcomed by a member of staff, and escorted to your room. The facilities of your room will be explained, and a nurse will prepare you for your operation.
  • If you are having a general anesthetic, it is important that you do not eat or drink anything for 4-6 hours before you operation. Times can vary, so to avoid going without food for too long, please telephone the hospital to find out the approximate time of your operation.
  • Please dress casually and do not wear restrictive garments. There is no need to bring any nightwear, and please do not wear any make-up, nail varnish or jewelry. (Wedding rings however are permitted.) For security reasons please leave your valuables at home.
  • If you are taking any medication, please bring it with you (in their prescribe container) and give them to the nurse in charge.

After the operation, any information, advice or details of further appointments will be given to you before you leave the hospital. If you are having a general anesthetic, you must arrange for someone to collect you, as you will not be fit to drive yourself. It is also important that you do not start driving until you have had a full nights rest. Whoever collects you, should stay with you for 24 hours following the anesthetic.
