Dr Neirosha Samarasekara is currently Consultant Anaesthetist at Durdans Hospital, Colombo.
She has over 18 years’ experience in the field of anaesthesiology. She started her career in anaesthesiology as a Senior House Officer in Anaesthesiology and Critical Care at Teaching Hospital Jaffna, and subsequently trained as Registrar and Senior Registrar in Anaesthesiology and Critical Care in the National Hospital of Sri Lanka. She obtained her MD in Anaesthesiology in 2005. She received her overseas training at Barts and The London School of Anaesthesia, UK, from 2006-2008. Subsequently she served as Associate Specialist in Anaesthesia and Intensive care in hospitals in London and in the West Midlands, UK. She returned to Sri Lanka in 2012, and worked for a year as Consultant Anaesthetist, Base Hospital Karawanella.
In 2013, she joined Durdans Hospital as Resident Consultant Anaesthetist, where she has provided anaesthetic services in general surgical, obstetric, orthopaedic and paediatric anaesthesia, and critical care services to the Accident and Emergency Unit, Medical ICU, Surgical ICU, Cardiac Intervention Services, and the Heart Command Centre, for the past 6 years. Dr Samarasekara has extensive training and experience in the field of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care, having worked in a variety of clinical settings, from state-of-the art hospitals with advanced multidisciplinary critical care and anaesthetic facilities to the rural setting in Sri Lanka with very limited facilities. She is certified both locally and in the UK for Advanced Life Support, Paediatric Life Support, Primary Trauma Management and Advanced Trauma Resuscitation.
Dr Samarasekera has been involved in research, and teaching and training of junior medical staff and nursing and paramedical staff. From 1996-1999 she was a volunteer doctor for the Sri Lanka Army Medical Corps, and actively served in conflict zones in Sri Lanka.
She obtained her secondary education at St.Francis College, Letchworth, UK.
